Ol' Quil Face

This Great Horned Owl was not feeling so good last saturday when it was brought in after trying to play with a porcipine. They spent quite a bit of time the next three days pulling out quils from its face and neck. That's a challenge when there's a lot of feathers in the way.

Right now it's enjoying a diet of mice and rats. No pointy things there to bother it.

I wonder if it has learned not to prey on porcupines.

I hope so John. I also hope it passes the word on when it gets released.

Ouch! Of all the places to put your face.

Meant to ask, do porcupine quills have barbs on them to make it extra painful when they're pulled out?

Dave Dorsey said...

Yes they do Laura. They sure don't pull out easy and ouch less.

Goofy bird. Do you see that regularly up there, porcupine vs. bird injuries? I can't imagine too many animals being dumb enough to try it.
