"For the Birds" 2010 is over

The evening started with Eryn doing an AWESOME job playing the piano for our arriving guest. That little lady has a lot of talent.

Our education birds were out entertaining the attendees. Everyone got to see what Bird TLC has to offer for education programs.

Staff and volunteers were busy most of the night.

We had to add 2 more tables. The event turn out to be a huge success. The calculators will be clicking away on Monday, but early reports are that we made over $23K "For the Birds"

Last chance this year

If you're looking for a place to give a last minute donation to a 501(c)3 non-profit organization so you claim it on your 2009 taxes, you're looking in the right place. If your looking to donate to a non-profit organization who cares about the wildlife who can't always take care of it self, think of Bird TLC.

We've had 34 bald eagles come into our clinic this year. Everything from being shot, electrocuted, caught in fishing lines, avalanches and just about anything you can think of.

We've done live bird presentations all over Alaska in schools, private organizations, youth groups and many more, educating the public about the wild birds in our state. All of our birds in our education program are not releasable because of injuries or illnesses that prevent them from being able to care for themselves in the wild.

We care for all birds native to Alaska or migrate through Alaska. That means songbirds, water fowl, raptors, corvids, etc. Every bird gets a second chance.

And every bird that can be released back to the wild is. Last year our release rate averaged about 55%. That's above the national average. Our staff and dedicated volunteers care for these birds 365 days a year.

We don't have a steady income from any government agency. We rely on donations from corporations and caring citizens.

You can also go to our Sponsor page and donate for a specific species in rehab, or you can go to our Donations page and donate to Bird TLC in general. Any way you choose, you can be assured that your money will be used to give the best possible care to the wild birds of Alaska.

The price of mice and rats is the same

But the price of shipping has gone up and it has gone up a lot. Next year Northwest Air Cargo won't be servicing Anchorage, so our supplier will have to find another shipper from Minnesota to Anchorage. I'm sure that shipping will go up even more. So the cost of feeding raptors will go up to.

Electricity has gone up, gas has gone up and just about everything else has also. The amount of donations have gone down though and the amount being donated is less also. The economy effects us all, but there are some that can't help it.

One of out motto's is "Because wild birds don't have medical insurance". We take them all. We try until they are ready to leave or there's no chance, but we try. And it doesn't come cheep.

We're always trying to improve the quality of care they receive also. Repairing mews, buying medicine and supplies that we can't get donated. It goes on and on.

If no other calls come from U.S.F.&W. or ERA Aviation today, BE 08-82 will be the last eagle we'll take in for 2008. He came from Cordova with a fracture at his left wrist that had already healed, but improperly. It's non-repairable, so he's a non-releasable bird. We'll find a home for him in 2009. He's already at the Flight Center getting plenty of exercise.

He'll make the 82nd eagle that Bird TLC has taken into its care in 2008. We have also taken in over 450 other types of wildbirds. I'll get you an exact count after the 1st.

As you can imagine this doesn't come by inexpensively. Today's economy has started to take it's effect on all non-profits, not just us. No matter what the economy does, we'll still be here doing what we do with what we have to do it with.

Those of you that read this blog know that I don't hound you for donations but just a couple times a year. Well, this is one of them. For those of you that need a tax break, we are a 501(c)3. For those of you from outside the US, sorry. But we still need your help.

500 plus birds takes its toll on the facility, equipment and supplies. Everything we have is well taken care of, but it still wears out. Updated equipment to us is the hand me down equipment that someone replaced to update theirs. We are grateful for it, but it still has high mileage by the time we get it.

So, if you have it in your heart to donate to a non-profit, I hope you pick TLC. There are thousands that need your help. If you don't pick TLC, please pick one. Being a salesman in my real life I have to add a perk for you. If you donate over $100 on PayPal by January 5, 2009 I will personally send a thank you letter. In that letter will include 2 Bird TLC items that aren't readily available to everyone. You have to donate to get them and you won't know what they are until you do.

Birds have friends at the Loussac Library

Ghost and I had the pleasure of going to the Loussac Library last week. The Friends of the Library posted a bounty for kids to read. Once they had reached their goal, anything more than that was donated to Bird TLC. These young readers helped raise $390 for Bird TLC.

Many thanks to the readers, Friends of the Library and Theresa who took the pictures. It's help like this that makes Bird TLC what it is today.

Tomorrows the night

Tomorrow night is the night. There might be a few tickets left to sell at the door, but not many. Havens Studio

Ghost and I will be at Haven's Studio today from 5 - 6 PM. Artist James Haven and his wife Andi are generously donating lots of his prints for cash donations to Bird TLC. They are also doing a BBQ during that time.

2007 "For the Birds"

A fun time was had by all. I could tell the crowd liked the entertainment by Mr Whitekey & The Spam Tones by the size of the Congo line. The food was awesome Chef Al and his fine staff out did themselves with the great food and service. The beer was almost gone and so was the wine when it was time to shut down. The auction committee members did a fine job. Thanks to all of our sponsors and donors.

It's all "For the Birds"

Saturday is the day. It's getting closer everyday and we are getting more and more great stuff for the auction. Things are looking real well. Dan at the Bird TLC Office was telling me yesterday that we have sold over 240 tickets. There are still a few available. There won't be any available at the door.

LOOK WHAT THOSE KIDS DID

The students at Golden View Middle School raised $3000 for Bird TLC. For each dollar raised, the student was given a raffle ticket to enter them in a drawing to throw a pie in their teachers face. 8 Teachers participated in the pie-a-thon. Yeah students!
